Updating Copyright Law for the Digital Era
It’s time to update copyright law for the digital era. The foundations of modern copyright were created in the 1700s, beginning with the Statute of Anne, when the main concern was regulating printed books and the printing press.
Today, creativity happens on digital platforms used by billions of people. Laws originally designed for the printing press era struggle to address the realities of modern online culture.
The right to culture is already recognized as a human right by:
- Article 27 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR)
- Article 15 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR)
- UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), Article 30
- United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
This petition stands for making this right real in the digital era.
